The campaigners of Drugs Awareness are appealing to companies who operate within the Cypriot community to support the campaign which aims to generate awareness to all generations, especially the vulnerable youth, to inform them of the dangers of drugs.

Parents of victims are often beside themselves, not knowing what step to take next to help their son/daughter to stop. The demise of drugs intake starts with one answer “yes”, which could have been due to peer pressure, then the addiction takes hold, and the traditional family life is destroyed by the victims who steal, become aggressive and destructive.

The Drugs Awareness Campaign, launched three years ago by Janice Ruffle, with an aim for zero tolerance, has a prime objective to provide talks by EU experts, victims and their families to address the innocent parties, allowing for information and knowledge about the dangers through media exposure too.

Socrates Socratous is a teenager from Paphos. He has two younger brothers and is highly educated, blessed with a technical mind and brain. Socrates realises that the youth today are experiencing new challenges than of previous generations. Issues like drugs awareness were not a necessity in the curriculum a few years ago, now it is a requirement to be informed of the dangers and to be provided with the confidence to “say no”.

“Parents should be informed of what they should look for in their child and we should support our friends if they are ever tempted to take drugs;” say Socrates. “We need to help the community and all generations to avoid temptation of illegal substances and provide distraction through youth groups.”

Socrates is fortunate to have a large family network of cousins and he enjoys a content home life with his family, spending hours on his computer. Recognising his talents in computing skills, he has agreed to be the designer and webmaster for the Drugs Awareness Campaign Auction Sale Site, which will raise funds to further

develop the campaign.

“I have so many ideas for the site, I want to include impact music and a You Tube that will feature shocking real live footage of drug abusers. I want to create a section for parents with information points on what to look for in their children if they suspect they are taking drugs, also a chat forum which will allow for victims to feel they have support in Cyprus,” says Socrates.

The website will include Sponsors Banners, who are also supporters of the campaign. For just 200€, a company can have their banner on the site demonstrating support to the campaign. The site, currently under construction www.auctionincy.com will list items of all kinds for auction sale on-line, with a percentage of the sale donated to the Drugs Awareness Campaign. There will be a feature for donated items for auction sale too and in time, Socrates wants to include other charities who will benefit from the

proceeds raised. “I see this as developing into a global site for all charities to benefit from, especially ones related to Drugs Awareness;” he concludes.

Socrates will be at future Drugs Awareness seminars to speak of his work on the campaign and support by preparing the website. All support for the Drugs Awareness Campaign CY is much appreciated to fund talks, seminars, press campaigns, the purchase of new visual displays and generate awareness through promotional activity.
