  CYPRUS EDUCATION SYSTEM  
 

The Education System in the Republic of Cyprus has four stages: pre-primary, primary, secondary and higher/tertiary. 

Nine years of education are compulsory (and free at state schools. Education is compulsory from Primary School (age 6) to the end of the third year of Secondary School (age 15).

Greek schooling consists of 4 stages - pre-primary, primary, secondary and higher/tertiary.

PRE-PRIMARY EDUCATION

There are 3 types of nursery school operated under the Ministry of Education and Culture -

Public nursery schools operate under the authority of the Ministry of Education and Culture, working parent association groups and local community authorities.

Communal nursery schools are run by parents' associations or local community authorities and must be registered by the Ministry of Education and Culture.

Private nursery schools must all be all approved by the Ministry of Education and Culture and operate according to the Private Schools' Law, 1971.

PRIMARY EDUCATION

Primary education like elsewhere in the EU is also compulsory in Cyprus and are administered by the Government. Education. Private schools is not free and fees vary from school to school.

Primary education is from the age of 5 years and 8 months. Any town or village with more than 15 children of school age will have a primary school. When primary school is completed a child will receive a leaving certificate but there are no formal completion examinations to progress to Secondary school.

SECONDARY EDUCATION

A child cannot enter secondary school without a leaving certificate showing completion of primary education. 

Secondary education is from from the age of 12 to 18. The first 3 years are compulsory and a student may not leave before their 15th birthday..

  • School day is from 7:30 to 13:35
  • School week - 5 days per week, Monday to Friday
  • The academic year begins in September and ends in June
  • Exams take place in June
  • The academic year is split into three semester - : September to December, December to March and March to May

The secondary school cycle is broken into two phases:

  • Gymnasio Cycle (lower secondary)
  • Lykeio Cycle (upper secondary)

Lower secondary school (Gymansio)

This is a period of education for ages 12 to 15.

Upper secondary school The Lykeio Cycle comprises two types of schools: the Eniaio Lykeio and Technical and Vocational Schools.

Upper secondary school (Lykeio) Eniaio Lykeio

Students who have completed the Gymnasio Cycle are elligible to join the Lykeio.

Secondary technical and vocational education (STVE)

After completing the Gymnasio Cycle - a student could if they wished continue with a 3-year technical education (STVE) provided they have a leaving certificate. Successful completion of secondary technical or vocational education allows a graduate to attend a tertiary institution. For further information on higher education, please click here.
